Recent evidence has led to a dramatic paradigm shift in the treatment of mild asthma, whereby international guidelines now include as-needed budesonide-formoterol as a first-line treatment option, in addition to the conventional approach of regular daily inhaled corticosteroids. Each of these therapeutic approaches has clear risks and benefits, and a choice between them should be based on individual patient values and preferences, through a shared decision-making process.
To address this important need, we worked with primary care providers and patients with asthma to build a mild asthma treatment decision aid (for patient use) and a single-page conversation aid (for use at the point-of-care). This manuscript presents these tools, describes our rigorous development process, and presents valuable insights gleaned from users regarding content priorities, optimal format, and the best implementation process:
